Funk Rating: 8 out of 10
If you haven't enjoyed a Repairman Jack book, you (a) don't like the supernatural/weird books (a la Stephen King), (b) haven't found the anti-Otherness angel of justice that is Repairman Jack particularly compelling, or (c) don't know what you're missing.
These are fun books. Perfect for the plane or the beach. They're sufficiently weird to be original, yet not so far out there to be annoyingly stupid. The main character is a stand-up guy who's as "off-the-grid" as they get (the government doesn't know he exists, and even most of his family thinks he's an appliance repairman). His role in life is to defend the innocent(s), fight the Otherness, and generally try to figure out his place in the universe (TBD)...
This one was right in the sweetspot of what Wilson writes well -- someone in distress who needs help; the "Otherness" (an evil side of the world that most of us don't know exists) raising its ugly head, some truly original characters, and a knock-down, drag out wickedly nasty fight with some seriously deranged creatures. Good vs. Evil in a way that no one else has really done well. Wilson puts the right context around it to read it solo if you've missed the series, or to enjoy it if you've read every one (I think I've read 4 of the 7).
If you want something a little different to give your brain a break, this is a good bet... Particularly ife you liked the late 90s dual novels by King The Regulators/Desperation...
